An "Eastman era" issue of one of the most influential socialist magazines in history, a radical co-operative publication founded in Greenwich Village that published some of the most important authors and artists of the time, seeking to champion socialist ideology and co-operatives until it was ultimately shut down after a lengthy showdown with the government in which they stood trial accused of trying to "unlawfully and willfully…obstruct the recruiting and enlistment of the United States [military]". Cover illustration by Frank Walts. Lead article by Max Eastman entitled "Knowledge and Revolution", opposite a frontispiece by John Sloan. Other articles include "Art and Humor", "Facing Race Suicide", and "The Question of Birth-Control". Goldwater, 151. Quarto. Bound in purple straight-grain brocaded silk with green pebbled leather backstrip titled in gilt; with green textured decorative paper endleaves backed with Fabriano, by Ruth Stein (unsigned). One of 45 copies printed on Stonehenge paper and signed by Torre. Few subtle but annoying stains on upper board. According to a note by Torre, these poems were not published until 1931, and are printed here for only the second time (the first time in a separate issue). Offered here in a fine hand-made binding.
