Mary Peters was born on a ship and the story is . centered on the life of a seafaring family with a theme of the abiding indestructible influences of the seafaring heritage of New England upon the natures of those intimately connected with it. Chase was Prof of English Literature at Smith College as well as being a distinguished author. At 16 she scribbled poetry & short stories, at 19 she wrote children's stories, & on her 20th birthday received $25 for an article entitled, "Why I Would Not Marry My Husband Again."
