Allbut forgotten, the genocide has rarely been mentioned in history books throughout the past century. As El-Ghusein points out through his book, it is important to remember these events and honor the many hundreds of thousands of souls who have perished as a result of a deeply flawed interpretation of Islam.

The plot is a simple, yet chilling one:the Ottoman Empire began rounding up the Armenian people ? who were among the richest and most well-educated at that time ? around 1915, and began basically eradicating them in the most heinous manner, through mass killings, slavery, rape and sometimes killing off entire families.

The author was anOttoman official at the time, and wasdeeply disturbed by the events that occurred and bythe distorted view of Islamic law that those who condoned and performed those horrific acts have been associated with. He also tells of some of the brave Turk soldiers who have disregarded their superiors' orders, and helped many Armenians escape the genocide, even ifrisking their own lives in the process.

Throughout his work, aside from depicting the courage of the Armenians who have been mercilessly murdered during that time period, El-Ghusein emphasizes the fact that the true nature of Islam is not reflective of the views of those who believed the Armenians ? who are Christians ? shouldbe eradicated. On the contrary, he warns against these dangerous interpretations of Islam, claiming thatthe religion itself was merely used as a tool by Ottoman politicians, in order to obtain what they wanted.

The Armenian genocide remains one of the most horrific examples of misused political and military power in history, and although it is seldom mentioned in classrooms, Fa'Iz El-Ghusein's Martyred Armenia paints a renewed and clear picture of the events, as they truly happened.
