Crediton: Richard Gilbertson, [1970].. First edition, withdrawn issue.. [8 pp]. Fine in printed marbled-paper wrappers with rivit binding. Withdrawn due to a transposition of two lines in the poem, and Hughes' disapproval of the wrappers. Although 100 numbered, signed and dated copies were projected, almost all of them - the bibliographers noting only one exception - were left unnumbered, unsigned, and undated, and never officially released. Devon: Richard Gilbertson, 1970. First Separate Edition. Second Printing "corrected". Stapled illustrated wrappers; thin 4to. One of 88 copies (#58) signed and dated by the author (of 100 total). The first printing was withdrawn (although sold), but except the author's copy likely never issued signed. According to the bibliographers and evidence online this second signed printing is far more scarce than the first printing. Small mark on front wrap; pages separated at staples. Still about very good. Sagar & Tabor A21a.2.

Larger format quarto paperback in pictorial self wraps with saddle stapled binding. Published in an edition of 100 copies, this copy numbered 69, signed and dated by Hughes on the title page. Cover and frontis illustrated with a woodcut reproduction forn Foxe's Book of Martyrs. The 1st issue was recalled due to a printer's error, though there remain some copies in collector hands. The 1st separate appearance of the poem which was earlier printed in Hughes' 1st book of poems. Superficial shelf evidence. VG++ to NF; Signed by Author .

[8]pp. Light tan stapled pictorial wrappers. Illustrated reproducing a woodcut on the front cover and first leaf. Fore-edge of front cover and entire rear cover a bit tanned, rear cover has faint offsetting from a letter from the publisher which had been laid in when mailed. Copy number 33 of 100 numbered copies Signed and dated by Ted Hughes.

Richard Gilbertson, 'The Manuscript Series', Crediton, 1970. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. Signed by Author(s). 2nd Edition. The second separate edition, corrected. Limited to 100 numbered copies, signed and dated by the author (this being #42). Royal 8vo. [8pp] stapled into card wrappers featuring a reproduction of a sixteenth-century woodcut taken from Foxe's 'Book of Martyrs', repeated on the first leaf. The wrappers lightly tanned and with a touch of light edge-creasing, and some surface abrasion to the verso of the first leaf where is appears a bookplate has been carefully removed. These are either new staples, or they were at some point repositioned. A nice, crisp copy of this uncommon item, somewhat more so that the uncorrected first issue (the poem was included in Hughes' debut collection 'The Hawk in the Rain'. Crediton, Devon: Richard Gilbertson,, 1970. First separate edition, this copy out series (as usual) of a stated issue of 100 copies. Presentation copy from the author to his sister Olwyn Hughes, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Olwyn with love Ted 3rd March 70 For the rose, the thorn is watered". This was one of Hughes's favourite mottoes. The poem was originally printed in The Hawk in the Rain collection. Small quarto. Original printed wrappers. Without the red and blue wrappers. A little toned, a couple of marks on covers, else a very good copy. Sagar and Tabor, A21a1.
