About This Item

Norwalk, Connecticut: The Easton Press, 1986. [1986] Hardcover. This is the full leather Easton Press edition. Black binding, leather hardcover featuring gilt designs/gilt lettering, 715 pages. Three raised ridges on spine. Lettering, designs stamped with accents of 22kt. gold - a hallmark of fine bookmaking. Book hand-selected from individually tanned hides. Textured and shaded, acid-neutral paper won't turn yellow over time. Pages are Smyth-sewn into binding for permanence (not glued like ordinary books). Edges gilded on three sides. Endpapers feature repeating eagle design. Satin ribbon page marker bound in. Condition: Age wear, handling to binding has affected gilt designs on covers (rubbing, scattered darkening of gilt and some absence of gilt in designs on front and rear covers). Gilt on spine is Fine. Rubbed marks, light scrapes to gilt edges (from handling, shelving). Text block: Light creases to pages, some waving of pages at preliminaries and several other pages at beginning of text, mostly from handling and reading. Overall, condition is Very Good. This biography of Martin Van Buren is straightforward, an honest profile of the U.S. President who succeeded Andrew Jackson. In 1837, the panic begun causing hundreds of banks and businesses to fail. Declaring the panic was due to recklessness in business and overexpansion of credit, Van Buren devoted himself to maintaining the solvency of the national government. He opposed not only the creation of a new Bank of the United States, but also the placing of government funds in state banks. He fought for the establishment of an independent treasury system to handle government transactions. He cut off expenditures so the government even sold the tools it had used on public works. He opposed the expansion of slavery. Insightful, historical book. Collectible. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical, vintage book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly. We will be pleased to serve you.. Leather Bound. Very Good.
