London: Chapman and Hall, 1844.<br/> <br/> Incredibly detailed city plan of Marseille, the oldest city in France and an important Mediterranean port. Waterways, parks, and forts are hand colored. Streets, plazas, prominent buildings, forts and batteries, bridges, churches, and other points of interest are labeled. Topography is rendered by hachure. The map depicts the city as it was in the mid-19th century. The title references the ancient city of Massilia, a Greek colony founded circa 600 BCE. Engraved by B.R Davies. In excellent condition.<br> <br> The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, or SDUK was formed in 1826 and published low cost maps with the goal of reaching a large market while still maintaining high quality and precision.<br/> <br/>
