About This Item

John Calder (Publishers) Ltd., London, 1962. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first English-language (first printing). 8vo. 236pp. Grey cloth lettered in gold at the spine. Edges lightly spotted, encroaching just a fraction to occasional leaf margins, and with a little further spotting to the endpapers and to three or four preliminary leaves. A nice bright copy in dust wrapper featuring a detail of a drawing of de Sade by Man Ray. The wrapper is clipped and re-priced by the publisher, and a little nicked, torn, and soiled with some fading to the publisher's spine panel colouring. The first appearance in English of De Beauvoir's 72-page essay, 'Must We Burn Sade?', which was originally printed over two issues of the journal 'Les Temps Modernes', and is here translated into English by Annette Michelson. This is followed by ten extracts from de Sade's writings, edited and translated by Paul Dinnage, plus a chronology and bibliography..
