Lovely decorated American trade binding - signed binding (monogram "S" in a box on cover). Beige cloth boards with black, red, gray and gold pictoral cover shows woman and cherub with a pile of gold coins. Black, red and gold decorated spine with red lettering. Very light general soiling to rear board. Binding is tight and square. Tiny spots of wear to base of spine. Gorgeous old custom bookplate on front pastedown, with neatly penned name and date (1899) at top edge of front free endpaper. Black and white illustrations throughout by Harrison Fisher. Soft vertical crease to first few pages. 401 pages. First edition, with Copyright, 1899 on copyright page and no mention of further printings on title page or copyright page. A novel about the complexities of capitalism in the late 19th century, by a Utica, New York author.it was a best-seller in its time..
