About This Item

[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Voigt Milling Company. MARK TWAIN FLOUR. Grand Rapids, Michigan, ca. 1900. Original paper flour sack, 25 lb. size, printed in bright colors with large portrait of Twain. Very fine unused example; this larger size is quite rare (most surviving sacks are the 5 lb. size). An unusual and very attractive example of the exploitation of his name and image. This company was formed as a partnership in 1898, began milling Mark Twain Flour by 1900, and continued selling it under that name until 1951; the company closed in 1955. The brochure that advertised this style of bag describes this flour as a "recent addition" to their line, hence the date assigned.
