First edition, each with the correct publisher's code on the copyright page (H-M in the first volume, I-M in the others). Three volumes. Octavo (8.125 x 5.5 inches; 205 x 140 mm.). 561, [1]; 563-1109, [1]; 1111-1718, [1] pages. Frontispieces and numerous illustrated plates inserted throughout. Publisher's red ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt, spine and front board ruled and stamped in gilt; top edge of the text block gilt, others untrimmed; plain endpapers. Spine ends barely pushed; extremities very lightly worn; corners very slightly bent; just a hint of rubbing to the boards and some very trivial soiling on the front board of the first volume.
