About This Item
A CONTEMPORARY MARINER'S COPY
4to. (3)-136pp, numerous woodcut diagrams, contemporary sheep with blind tooled Cambridge panels on sides, neatly rebacked with a new plain and unlettered spine, original endpapers reused, no half-title A1, some old cracking to the leather on front board, contents locally a trifle dusty, but generally very good.
Inscribed on front endpaper "Saml. Langford/ Book/ Anno Dom. 1754" in a calligraphic hand and with some other contemporary notes on payments for "oyle" and wine and glasses. Later manuscript notes on rear endpapers.
ESTC n4038 locating National Library of Scotland, National Maritime Museum, Smithsonian and Univ. of Michigan only.
First published in 1680 and then regularly reprinted throughout the eighteenth century. Although the text is therefore fairly easily available the individual editions are rare due to its use as a working tool on board ship. The calendar data was recalculated for each edition (this edition was made "to serve (without any considerable error) till the year 1768" from 1753. The will of Samuel Langford, "Mariner of Shadwell, Middlesex" dated 21 March 1743 is in the National Archives at Kew.
