About This Item

Philadelphia: James Humphreys, 1806. This is the American reprint of a British classic. There are two Philadelphia editions listed, 1806 and 1810, both in four volumes... Duncans Mariners Chronicle was probably the most popular source for other compilers of later years. Many American editors stole material from this set, and even the title was used three or four times. - Huntress 143C. Contains accounts of dozens of shipwrecks on the European, African and American coasts as well as in the West Indies and on the high seas. Bound in full 19th century calf with spine labels. Tanning and foxing throughout; some signatures are slightly pulled but remain securely bound. Frontispiece in volume II is torn at the top margin, with slight loss. Despite these flaws, which are common in kind to almost every set of this edition, the text is legible, and the bindings are attractive and sound.. Four volumes, 10.5 x 18.5 cm. various paginations. b/w plates
