SIGNED by the author near the full page illustration of her across from the full title page. She signed the book using her Tewa name Maria Poveka. Poveka means Water Lilly in the Tewa language. The Tewa are a linguistic group of the Pueblo. This is the true story of Maria Poveka Martinez and her husband, Julian, who revived the ancient Pueblo craft of pottery-making and stimulated interest in Southwestern Pueblo pottery among both white people and Native Americans. Her success brought artistic fame and money, but also tragedy. No previous owner marks. Text and illustrations clean and bright. Foxing to page edges, does not affect the text or illustrations. Minor shelfwear to edges of covers. Minor foxing to pastedowns. Dust Jacket has minor foxing to both flaps. Wear to both top and bottom DJ edges including several small tears and a few larger ones (0. 5") . Rubbing to leading edges of flaps. Glue residue at top of spine.
