16mo, cloth spine and boards, paper label on spine, 4 illustrations, including frontispiece, 144 pp. Top cover almost detached, back cover detached, some extremity wear and slight staining, internally slight foxing, but generally bright and clean. Jacob Abbott (1803-1879) is considered one of the most prolific writers of children's books in the 19th century. He and his brothers produced a well received set of historical biographies, which included stories on Xerxes, Darius the Great, and Alexander the Great. He also produced a few travel and adventure books. The current tile is about life along the Erie Canal in the mid 19th century. heritage-history website.
