A selection from letters written by soldiers fighting in Britain's dozens of African military campaigns during Queen Victoria's reign, from Abyssinia and the Gold Coast to the Cape. These include the Anglo-Boer War, the Frontier Wars in the Eastern Cape, the Ashanti War, in Egypt with Wolseley, and with the Mahdi & the Khalifa in the Sudan. Culled from contemporary newspapers and lent from surviving relatives the letters offer personal insights not found in official sources. Author gives an explanatory narrative of British military intervention in Africa.
