About This Item

Doubleday, Doran & Co, New York, 1938. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Poor. Book After Roberts had provided a volume of the original source material used in his research in the limited edition of "Northwest Passage," his readers requested he provide the sources for his first novel, "Arundel." The blurb on the front flap of the dust jacket notes, "The present book, composed of authentic journals, diaries and letters from which the vital background of Arundel was drawn, is the first step in this direction." Roberts provides his own notes, "amplifying and clarifying" the sources. This is the Sept. 9, 1938 First Edition, which was followed by eight more printings through 1959. Roberts added new material in the second (Nov. 14, 1938), third (1940) and eighth (1953) printings Size: Octavo (8-9"). 657 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight and unmarked with the pages somewhat toned from age. Very Good+ hardcover bound in russet-colored cloth over boards with the title in bright gilt on the spine. The corners are sharp and show next to no shelf wear. There is a slight bump along the top edge of the rear cover close to the spine. No foxing in this copy. All that is left of the dust jacket is the front panel and unclipped ($4.00) front flap. A printed scan of the missing spine, rear panel and rear flap is inserted into the archival clear Brodart sleeve so the spine won't be the blank white paper of the sleeve. Previous owner's signature in ink on the front free end paper, along with the small stamp of another owner and a previous bookseller's penciled note ($50-- 1st Edition). There is a thin line of adhesive left over from a missing piece of tape that appears to have held something along its bottom edge on the front free end paper. Deckled edges (rough cut). Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; Revolutionary War; United States; 1930s; Military & Warfare. Main Picture: Roberts (1938), March to Quebec (First ed.) - Front panel of the partial dust jacket and spine of the cover with inset of the First Edition notice.
