London, c. 1904. Lithographed folding map, 55 x 76 cm, printed in colours, minor wear to folds, old split along one fold and short tear repaired with tape on verso, blank verso; folding into red stiff-card printed wraps, with booksellers label on front cover. Produced to illustrate the Russo-Japanese War, the map indicates Treaty Ports, dockyards and naval bases, including the German Kiautschou Bay concession (given here as Kiao Chau), the British leased territory at Weihaiwei, and Port Arthur, then under Russian control and a major contributory factor to the outbreak of war. An inset of the Gulf of Pechili (Bohai Sea) shows the environs of Port Arthur, and further insets show the environs of Peking (Beijing), Shanghai and Tokio (Tokyo). Map
