About This Item

New York: Harper & Row, 1972. 463 pp, 8 5/8" H. Signed: "Fanny Butcher" on front free endpaper. B&w photographs. "This is the extraordinary memoir of the lifelong passion - and the multiple friendships - of one of the outstanding women of (the twentieth century), who has lived her life to the full in the heart of the Midwest and the literary circles of two continents. Young Fanny Butcher began her career just before the dawn of the Chicago literary renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. (S)he got a job as assisant to the woman's editor of the Chicago Tribune, and worked her way to the position of literary editor during the overlordship of Colonel Robert R. McCormick. (S)he was in turn a reporter, music critic, and society editor, but she spunkily created her own book columns, and reviewed and interviewed and made friends with hundreds of American, French, English and other writers whose success in midland America she helped to promote by her profound involvement in their work. For almost fifty years at the Tribune she took an active share in the life of her times - not only as a book reviewer but as a bookshop proprietor and as an advocate of good causes, from women's suffrage to freedom of expression for the writer. Here are her personal recollections of Edna Ferber, Willa Cather, Carl Sandburg, Sinclair Lewis, H.L. Mencken, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Louis Bromfield, James Joyce, Andre Maurois, Thornton Wilder, Fannie Hurst, and many, many others." Light toning to edges of text block, slight colour fading at top edge of boards and spine, bump/wrinkling at top of spine and light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate to heavy sun fading on spine - lettering is still legible, very light browning on rear flap-fold and at top edge of flaps, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine including a few small and tiny tears, two tiny dents on rear hinge area, very small two-letter notation in red ink at top of front flap.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good+.
