About This Item

Paris: Firmin Didot Frères, Fils, et Cie, 1860 8 volumes, 8vo (25.5 cm), contemporary uniform morocco-backed boards, 4 raised bands, spines gilt, front and back boards with double gilt fillets, top edges gilt, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, marbled endpapers (bindings slightly rubbed, corners somewhat scuffed, paper slightly toned). Together with Dictionnaire de géographie ancienne et moderne à l'usage du libraire et de l'amateur de livres. Paris: Firmin Didot Frères, 1870. 8vo (24.5 cm). Contemporary chagrin-backed marbled boards. Raised bands, spine gilt (binding slightly rubbed, paper slightly toned). From the library of American collector Owen Franklin Aldis (bookplates designed by Ralph Seymour Fletcher tipped in the front endpapers, Aldis heraldic bookplates on the back endpapers ). The fifth and the best edition. The first edition of Jacques-Charles Brunet's Manual was published in 1810. "The three-volume work expanded to its fifth edition, comprising six volumes (1860-1865), still in use today; three supplementary volumes by Pierre Deschamps and Gustave Brunet were published from 1870 to 1880. Brunet's annotations about the scholarly and commercial value of the books are often still unsurpassed." (Breslauer & Folter 118).
