About This Item
London: The Field, 1878. First edition of a classic and much-reprinted work. Despite its title Kemp's book is more concerned with yacht design and details of construction than with seamanship. Text, plates and illustrations in the text detail British and American yachts, their designs and rigging. With interesting chapters on steam yachts and canoes. Toy considers Kemp a central figure in British yachting, citing this book's "crisp and authoritative instructions on... building, equipment, seamanship, open sailing boats, centre-board boats, sailing boats of the Clyde and Mersey... steam yachts, ice yachts, and canoeing." Pages 313-384 are an illustrated dictionary of yachting terms. See Toy 2152. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, backstrip laid down, endpapers renewed. Light rubbing to cover. Text and plates very good condition.. 26.5 cm. vi, (2), 388, (12 adverts) pp. b/w ills. and plates, some of which are folding.
