A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates. Some occasional spotting and damp-staining to odd volumes but not terribly so. The bindings are overall in Fair condition with several split (and one entirely loose) backstrips and corners. About this book
Michael James Whitty (1795 - 1873), newspaper editor and proprietor, native of Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, commenced his literary career in London, and among his earliest friends were Sir James Bacon and George Cruikshank. He published anonymously in 1824 two volumes of Tales of Irish Life stories which depict the customs and condition of the people of his homeland, and were a great success, being reprinted in America and also translated into French and German.

A dictionary of dreams, often categorized both in an elaborate and inordinate manner. This title was the first in a series of books on dreams, based on the writer's own oneiric experiences and shrouded in mysticism. Text block is heavily toned. This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.
