Rare copy of first three vol. German edition of Austrian writer Robert Musil's masterpiece. The first two volumes were published in Berlin in 1930 and 1933. The incomplete third volume was published posthumously in Lausanne, Switzerland by Musil's widow, Martha Marcovaldi (née Heimann) in 1945 and includes photographic portrait of Musil. Robert Musil ranks among the foremost novelists of the 20th century. His literary reputation rests almost entirely on this philosophical novel Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften, a life-work to which he devoted himself from 1924 until his death in 1942 and which describes "Eigenschaftslosigkeit," the state of being without qualities named in the novel's title. Interior of three volumes, boards and bindings are intact. No shelfwear. Some soiling to boards of Vols. 1 and 2 and age darkening to spine of Vol. 1 and to spine of Vol. 3 dust jacket. No dust jackets for Vols. 1 and 2. A Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee mystery set in prehistoric sites in Chaco Canyon and elsewhere in the Four Corners area, map endpapers, Hieb bibliography A10a, this copy Signed by Hillerman, it was with this title that Ernest Franklin, a Navajo artist, first started to illustrate Hillerman titles, when found, Hillerman's books usually have one original drawing by Franklin, but this copy has 17 original color drawings by Franklin, very scarce thus, housed in a cloth slipcase, according to bookseller Ernie Bulow who helped start this cottage industry of illustrating Hillerman's titles with Franklin, there are only three or four books of this title with multiple illustrations, this was likely a review copy, while there is no review slip, there is a c.5X7-inch b&w photo of Hillerman seated at his desk that would have accompanied a review copy. Leipzig, Germany: Otto Hotze's Rachfolger, 1922. This is a survivor of days gone by. Just after World War One, or as they knew it, The Great War, this book was published in Germany. It somehow survived WWII, either by traveling overseas beforehand thus avoiding the book burnings there, or being hidden by some intrepid rebel right under the noses of the Nazis. The edges of the book are sunned, the aging pages have come loose from the wraps all as a whole stapled group. The interior is delicate, but filled with such interesting anomalies, I have to offer it to the historians of the world.. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Poor. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book.
