About This Item
Manitou, Colorado: James Thurlow, 1870. Circa 1870s albumen landscape stereoview that includes a distant image of a Native American tepee with a horse and what appears to be a Native American man standing nearby. James Thomas Thurlow (1831-1878) was a British-born immigrant who had a photography studio in Manitou, Colorado during the 1870s. The stereoview is in very good condition: the image is clean and bright, on a mount that has very minor edgewear and soiling. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection, many of which can be viewed on the library's website. The stereoview is in an envelope that Dennis used to circulate the view for comments from fellow amateur stereo photographers, who like Dennis were members of The Stereoscopic Society. Both front and back of the envelope include their handwritten comments.. First Edition. Stereoview. Very Good. Illus. by James Thurlow. Photo.
