About This Item

New York: W.B. Gilley and C. Wiley and Co, 1818. Hardcover. Fair. First American edition. Two volumes: 214 pp. ; 211, [1] pp. ; 19 cm. Both volumes are fair but sound and complete as first issued in the original publishers' printed paper boards, with soiling and scuffing to the boards and wear to the board edges. The original binding structure is sound, with the usual cracks to the printed paper spine backs parallel with the gatherings; most of the original paper spine back remains on volume 1, and about half remains on volume 2. The original sewing has been reinforced with circa late 19th century stitching along the back joint of volume 1 and the front joint of volume 2. The front cover title pages and back cover advertisements are all legible and printed within decorative borders. The page edges are all untrimmed. There is foxing and some browning to the endpapers, with only slight scattered foxing and small scattered stains throughout the text pages. A scarce American imprint. Shaw & Shoemaker 44168.
