Richly illustrated with sepia and colour plates; there are some iconic images (by Fox Talbot, Stieglitz, Avedon, etc.), but many are unusual and rarely reproduced. Spans the entire history of photography, with an American emphasis. The author Carroll T. Hartwell was Curator of Photography at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, a small institution which was exceptional in collecting photography from the mid-1960s on, at a time when other museums were still ambivalent about recognizing photography as a fine art..
