About This Item

London: Hamilton, 1955. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Publisher's blue boards with gilt lettering to the spine. A VG copy (gilt dulled; some foxing to the page block edges;' faint evidence of a book-plate having been carefully removed from the front paste-down). The dustwrapper is VG indeed and priced 9s 6d to the inside flap (as called for). There is a slither of shallow loss to the tip of the spine that stretches to the top left-hand corner of the front panel. Looks better than it sounds. Great cover art by Robin Jacques. `Photographs/scans available upon request.

Synopsis

While committing what he intends to be his last burglary, "Sad Freddie" discovers something completely out of his line: the body of a dead woman, her chest covered in blood, holding a telephone in her hand. Inspector Maigret is called in to solve the crime, and after an exhaustive search, a psychological duel, a marathon interrogation, and innumerable glasses of Pernod, wine, cold beer, and brandy--a sure sign that this is no easy case--the famous French sleuth triumphs. Maigret is a registered trademark of the Estate of Georges Simenon
