About This Item

Leningrad-St. Petersburg, NAUKA, 1974-1994. Three volumes in three. Large 4to (29.1 x 22.0 cm). 522 pp. [188; 216; 118]; 299 (groups of) text figures [97; 132; 70]; 381 plates [124; 172; 85]. Publisher's semi-uniform blue and green cloth with gilt title on the front boards and spines. A magnificent work on Mesozoic and Tertiary flowering plants including many trees, based mainly very well-preserved leaves and seeds, with numerous new species. It was published over a long period, past the end of the Soviet period, hence the different titles. Volume 1 deals with Magnoliaceae - Eucommiaceae. Volume 2 was published in 1982 with the same general title, and deals with Ulmaceae - Betulaceae; volume 3 has the new post-Sovjet title, Magnoliophyta fossilia Rossiae et Civitatum Finitimarum, with L. Budantsev as chief editor. Many specialists contributed to these three works. The illustrations are excellent. Many text figures are in fact large groups of figures, sometimes page-sized. The work also includes several maps with (type) localities. Library stamp on titles, otherwise a very good, clean set. Rare.
