London: B. and S. Tooke, et al, 1723. 26th edition of England section and 5th edition of the Scotland section. Leatherbound. Good. vi, 672, 48, 8 p. 21 cm. Engraved frontispiece. Full leather with raised bands and blind impressing. Front hinge nearly detached. Corners worn. Chipping to top of spine. Front pastedown endpaper damaged and one rear endpaper missing. Ink and pencil notations on endpapers. Minor foxing and thumbing throughout.
Edward Chamberlayne (1616-1703) first published his "Angliae Notitae" or "Present State of England" in 1669. By the time of his death, the work had gone through 20 editions and been translated into French. His son John (1666-1723) carried on the work under the new title "Magnae Britanniae Notitia." The work is a handbook to political, social and economic conditions throughout Britain. The last and 36th edition appeared in 1755.
