About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1952. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Maurice Sendak. First edition stated; 12mo, 151 pages, 26 black and white drawings by Maurice Sendak; red cloth boards with faint water spots and wear at extremities, previous owner's name and address at top of front free endpaper, small brown spot at top edge of rear free endpaper; clipped dust jacket is rubbed and worn with paper reinforcement expertly applied along inside edges. The Newbery award winning author of "Journey Cake, Ho!," and "Roller Skates" was considered a consummate storyteller, and her storytelling shines through in this book as well. Through Maggie Rose, and her poor, shiftless family known as "those Bunkers," Sawyer explores class, ambition, work ethic, family ties and kindness. Uncommon title.
