About This Item

London: Nicholson & Watson, 1938. First Edition. Hard Cover. First UK Edition. With a Special Foreword by Madame S B Prunier and decorations by Mathurin Meheut. Publisher's pale blue buckram binding with the Sponsorship notice from the Lady Melchett and Hon. Mrs. Malcom Bowes Lyon and Colonel the Hon. Angus McDonnell laid-down inside the front cover as issued. End-papers browned and offset however boards bright and clean. Foxing to the fore-edge. A tiny bookseller's ticket to the rear paste-down. Overall, a VG (or better) copy with the book-plate of Charles W. Berry of 3 St. James's Street to the front free end-paper. This address is, of course, the retail premises and head office of "Berry Brothers and Rudd" the family-run British wine and spirits merchant founded in London in 1698 at 3 St. James's Street. Laid in is an invitation from Madame Prunier to Charles W Berry for a dinner at Chez Prunier on Saturday 8 October 1938 on the occasion of the baptism of her cookbook for which Violet The Lady Melchett, The Honourable Mrs Malcolm Bowes-Lyon and Colonel The Hon. Angus McDonnell kindly agreed to be godmothers and godparents. A cookery classic. Ambrose Heath, described it as 'a really thrilling book...that should take its place among the classics of the kitchen'. Simple but wonderful recipes. Uncommon in this, the true first edition. No dustwrapper. Photographs/scans available upon request.
