About This Item

Atheneum, 1987. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1987 hardcover with dust jacket. FIRST PRINTING with full number line on copyright page. APPEARS UNREAD with unmarked, crisp-edged, well-bound pages. Jacket shows minor shelf-rubbing and minor edge wear only. A very good, very useful copy! From the jacket description: "They called her a 'singer's singer,' and she was a legend among them. Billie Holiday, Bobby Short, Johnny Mathis, Nat "King" Cole, and Frank Sinatra were just some of the performers who called themselves her students. Composers from Cole Porter to Bart Howard wrote songs like "Love for Sale" and "Fly Me to the Moon" for her to introduce. The British royal family was among her devoted fans. Stereo Magazine gave her its first Award of Merit--and later renamed it in her honor. As late as 1982--when she was eighty-two--Mabel Mercer was still performing. Her dignity, her talent, won her international acclaim--it was said that nobody could interpret a song or caress a lyric the way she could. And in 1983, the year she died, she received the Medal of Freedom, our nation's highest tribute.
