he was appointed acting commandant [of the Kroonstad commando] in April 1900, and took part in the battles of Sannaspos (31.3.1900), Mostertshoek (3.4.1900), Rooiwal (7.6.1900) and Bethlehem (6-7.7.1900). In January 1901 he became commandant of the Vredefort commando, fighting in this capacity until the end of the war, in the last months of which he and his men were active in the Vredefort area. During the negotiations at Vereeniging which led to the declaration of peace on 31.5.1902, he represented the Lower Renoster River (Vredefort) section of the Kroonstad commando and was one of six delegates who voted against accepting the British conditions for peace. He was later awarded the Dekoratie voor Trouwe Dienst (D.T.D.) for his services in the struggle for independence.
Van N. was a man of powerful stature and proud bearing. To his ardent patriotism and love of his heritage he added a simple dignity and humble piety. He was in fact an aristocrat of Afrikaners and at the end of a long life he had a unique place in the hearts of his people as 'Oom Chris'. Three days after his death he was buried with full military honours in the 'Heldeakker' in Oudtshoorn near his friend of long standing, C. J. Langenhoven." - H. C. Hopkins, DSAB IV, p. 703. .
