About This Item
Ancient world 484 Cicero, Marcus Tullius. M. Tullii Ciceronis opera: Cum indicibus et variis lectionibus. Tomus secundus: philosophicorum primus, and Tomus tertius: philosophicorum alter. (Volumes II to III have title: M. Tullii Ciceronis Operum). Oxonii: E Typographeo Clarendoniano, 1783. Volumes II and III only of a 10 volume set. The price for these rare and handsomely bound volumes is: $150.00
There are 519 pages of text plus approximately 150 pages of the Variae lectiones in Volume II. It measures 11 ½" x 9" x 2". The page block is very bright, beautiful paper. The bottom right corner of the title page has about 1 inch torn off and a couple of 1 inch tears in the margins of other pages. There is offsetting on two pages in the Variae where a previous owner probably used the leather label from Volume V as a bookmark. There are 426 pages of text plus approximately 106 pages of the Variae lectiones in volume III. It measures 11 ½" x 9" x 1 1/2". The page block appears to have no blemishes, made from the same beautiful paper.
The bindings are both in perfect condition. I am hardly an expert in leathers but if I had to guess I would say they are bound in brown pig's skin – I could be wrong in that though. The spine labels are in black with gilt lettering. The paper edges are red speckled reflected in the matching red marbleized lining papers. Again, if I had to guess, I would say that they were probably bound up maybe 25 to 35 years ago. Who knows what a bookbinder would charge for such work today?
Text based on Olivet's edition (Paris 1740) with "Variae lectiones" at end of each volume, collected by T. Hearne and the anonymous editor. Olivet's notes, omitted in this collection, were later published in a supplementary volume, with title: 'Jos. Oliveti delectus commentariorum in M.T. Ciceronis opera omnia. Oxonii, 1824.' The tenth volume is an index by J.A. Ernesti with title: "Clavis Ciceroniana: sive Indices rerum et verborum philologico-critici in opera Ciceronis. Accedunt Græca Ciceronis necessariis observationibus illustrata."
