[From jacket flaps] Lumber and lumber products have always played an outstanding role in our economy. But today, they have a new significance. For instance, lumber is the most important single commodity in the housing problem confronting the nation. As in so many other fields of technology, new peacetime opportunities for the lumber industry have grown out of wartime experience. This book deals thoroughly with these opportunities. It offers a complete discussion of the industry - from actual manufacturing processes to the distribution of the product. The book analyzes the general manufacturing procedures for converting logs into lumber, and discusses equipment, sawing methods, power requirements, and the utilization of by-products. Conditioning, both by air seasoning and kiln drying, is explained in theory and practice, and the grading process is examined to present its aims and methods. The distribution of lumber through the manufacturer, retailer, and wholesaler, and the utilization of the distributed product are dealt with at length. Throughout the book, the author constantly stresses the necessity for efficient and economical production methods in all stages, so that the present-day demands for greater productive capacity can be met effectively. Nelson C. Brown's experience qualifies him to speak with authority. In addition to his professorship at the New York State College of Forestry, he has been in the lumber business as both a manufacturer and wholesaler. He has worked with the United States Forest Service in the Northwest, as well as in Alabama and Florida. He has served with the United States Lumber Trade Commission in Europe, has made an economic study of the lumber industry for the United States Tariff Commission, and has acted as consultant to several private firms in this country.
