This book is an antique and is in fair condition. The binding is loose and cracked on the inside of the front board. Dark green cloth covered boards that have significant wear on the edges, spine and corners. The previous owners signature is written on the inside of the front board. The pages are tanned and yellowed, but are still readable.Also a Life Sketch of Theodore Roosevelt and "memorial tributes by statesmen, ministers, orators and rulers of all countries"; profusely illustrated with photos, drawings and "special pictures of the Family by Express Permission from the Owners"

Each volume contains 12 engraved plates - so 24 in total. The wide pages are each divided in 4 columns, and pagination is by column, rather than page. Each volume contains 12 issues, each containing 12 pages and a plate. These are not dated, but have the title to the top of the first (4) pages. So each volume has 144 pages (despite a pagination of 576.) Some darkening / spotted foxing to the pages, but overall in very respectable condition. 250 x 180 mm (9¾ x 7 inches). Deux tomes. A Very Good or better illustration of author Bret Harte published in Vanity Fair magazine for July 4, 1879, including the Vanity Fair profile of Harte, being Vanity Fair's "MEN OF THE DAY. No. 191." with evidence of the two pages having been removed from a larger volume which once likely held them. Examples of this original material are surprisingly uncommon to the market. A Very Good or better UNCOMMON piece of Bret Harte literary ephemera.

Boards are heavily soiled and scuffed with dents and bumps to edges. Spine has been repaired. Small bookseller's plate on FEP from Wiley & Sons, Law Booksellers, Lincoln's Inn, London. Pencil price and publication information on FEP. Hinge is loose. A few pages from The Table of Principal Matters at rear of book are loose. Pages are clean and well-preserved.
