New York: Viking Press, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Very Good in a Very Good jacket, unclipped ($3.00), generally rubbed and toned, a few creases at the corners. Green buckra, foxed and toned at the spine and front joint, with green lettering on the spine and front board. Square and firmly bound with a green top stain, former owner's bookplate inside the front board, clean otherwise. Green's "society novel in reverse" which focuses on "the lives and loves of the servants' hall in a rich woman's castle in Ireland at the beginning of the war.
Synopsis
Henry Green was the pen name of Henry Vincent Yorke. He was born in 1905 at the family home of his parents, near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, England, and was educated at Eton and Oxford. He worked at the family engineering firm for most of his life and pursued a parallel career as a novelist. He married in 1928 and had one son. During WWII he served in the London Fire Brigade. He died in December 1973.
