SYNOPSIS: Turning from the uniformity of today's streamlined living, more and more people find roots in Victoriana - the undiscovered treasure in Granny's attic, the unrecognized find in the junkshop and at auctions. For these collectors, Mrs. Browning provides a practical guide for the restoration of their discoveries. With clear and simple explanations, supplemented by dozens of her own illustrations, she describes antiquing, decorating and finishing furniture, old and new. She also provides suggestions for spotting good lines and workable pieces at auctions and in junkshops, which help the prospective buyer avoid the pitfall "bargains." Her book reveals a world of color and design through which even an absolute beginner can transform a nondescript object into a lovely and personal piece. Elizabeth Lowry Browning lives with her husband and children in Evansville, Indiana. Her enthusiasm for redoing and decorating furniture was a natural progression from her continuing interest in easel painting. Admirers of her painted furnishings asked her for instructions, and from that modest beginning her classes have grown and expanded over the years. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, she lectures on contemporary art at the Evansville Museum.
