Her masterpiece,'' this book is considered to have been an inspiration for Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby, documenting the decline of wealthy socialites in tandem with the decline of the American frontier. In 174 pages. Oddly, page 157-158 is missing, but not cut out: rather, it never seems to have been bound into the book. This page contains one of many points used to distinguish different states of the true first edition (but this is a much later printing anyway, so the point is moot). Originally published in 1923, this is the 18th printing from , in the second state binding & DJ. Hardcover 12mo has bright shamrock green cloth over boards stamped with a paper title & author label to front & spine lettered in black & decorated in orange. Condition is Near Fine: virtually flawless save for mild pushing to heel of spine & very mild corner bumping, slight offsetting to endpapers. Wonderfully woodcut bookplate reminiscent of Rockwell Kent from former owner to ffep; else, pages are completely clean & unmarked, with age-appropriate tanning. Binding strong & straight, hinges secure. The price-clipped DJ is VG, with chipping at corners & both ends of spine & a small hole to center spine, which has darkened; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover free!
