From 1933 to 1945, John Service covered most of China as an officer in the U.S. State Department. While serving under General Joseph Stilwell in 1944, Service was attached to the American Military Observers Mission to Yenan, Mao's headquarters, and thereby became one of the first official Americans to have extensive direct contact with the Communists.
