London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1930. First UK edition. 8vo, 312pp. Illustrations throughout. Presentation copy, inscribed by Shepard to Robert W. Gordon on the ffep. Red cloth lettered in blind on front cover and gilt on spine, top edge stained red. Minor wear to boards, light foxing to page block edge and endpapers. Near fine.
Inscribed first edition of this important work on unicorns, exploring in depth their appearance in legend and literature, including in the bible, over the centuries. Odell Shepard (1884-1967) was a writer, professor, and Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut. In 1938 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his Pedlar's Progress: The Life of Bronson Alcott.
This copy inscribed to his college friend at Harvard, and later, colleague at the University of California, Robert W. Gordon (1888-1961). Gordon was an important figure in the preservation and study of American Folk-Song.
