Houghton Mifflin Company, 1967. Second Edition/Various Printings. Hardcover. Fair/Good. A complete set of the Second/Revised Edition without slipcase. All books ex-lirbary with black illustrated cloth with gilt/colored foils and tinting to top page ends. The Fellowship of the Rings states Ninth Printing, but no price on jacket so book club. Book has vertical crease to spine, some rubbing through cloth at bottoms of boards, hinge repairs at endpapers with paper scarring and usual stamps. No map. Soiling to page ends. Jacket has some chips at spine ends/corners and tape reinforcement to inside of spine and flap creases/corners, and outside at head and heel - Poor/Good. The Two Towers states Twelfth Printing. Book has some rubbing through cloth to bottoms of boards, pocket to ffep and stamps/stickers, tape stains and some moisture stains to endpapers. Map attached to inside of rfep. Soiling to page ends. Jacket is unclipped($9.95) with tape reinforcement to top and bottom inside of spine, moisture stain to top inside of spine, some scratches, nicks, abrasions and a short tear - Fair/Good. The Return of the King states Fourth printing. Book has pocket to ffep with paper scarring to same, paper residue from old jacket protector to pastedowns and a few library stamps. No map. Some spots to top page ends. Jacket is unclipped ($6.50) with just a few marks/spots of residue to inside of front flap and a little sticker removal scarring to spine - Fair/Very Good.

Synopsis

The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist and Oxford University professor J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1954, much of it during World War II.  After the success of  The Hobbit , Tolkien’s publisher asked that he produce a sequel. Although written as one big work comprised of six books,  The Lord of the Rings  was broken into three separate volumes because of post-World War II paper shortages and size and price considerations. The print run of the first editions was very small: 3,000 copies for  The Fellowship of the Ring  (1954), 3,250 copies for  The Two Towers  (1954), and 7,000 copies for  The Return of the King  (1955).  The Lord of the Rings  went on to become one of the best-selling novels ever, with more than 150 million copies sold.
