Second edition.. 1908.. 107pp + 13 page appendix in English, 85 + [14]pp in Japanese, endpapers foxed, lower edge of lower cover damaged with small loss, text very good and clean. Original green cloth titled in gilt both covers (in English and Japanese respectively). Bilingual account of the events surrounding the opening of Japan from a Japanese perspective. Lord Hotta favoured Japan's engagement with the west when many around him were strongly opposed to this policy. Important biography of a controversial figure, who negotiated the commercial agreement between Japan and the United States with Commodore Perry. An insight into an extraordinary period in Japanese history.
