About This Item
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1990. First Edition, First Printing. . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. There have been many improvements in the treatment of mental illness, including bipolor disorder/manic depression since Millett, author of the landmark "Sexual Politics" and "The Basement," decided in 1980 to stop her lithium medication with its several side effects to prove her sanity to herself and those around her. This memoir covers the period in Millett's life after that decision, from her elation at the beginning ("the happiest summer of my life") through a period of increasing doubts about her sanity and the loyalty of the people around her. Haunted by memories of two previous involuntary commitments to mental hospitals, Millett became terrified she would be "captured" again, and escaped an attempt to have her commited only to be forcibly confined to a mental hospital on a trip to Ireland. Given the difficulty for those who haven't experienced mental illness to understand its pain and terror, Millett's patient's perspective of her illness and of our system of dealing with mental illness is invaluable. Boards are lightly bumped at spine ends, with a bit of fading along the top edges. The top of the text block shows some light soiling, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square, not remaindered. The dustjacket shows a touch of surface/edge wear, with a bit of curling along the top edge; spine ends slightly bumped; spine shows touch of sunning, o/w no tears, no creasing or chipping, not price-clipped. An important book from an important feminist author.
