On August 21, 1987, Frederick Downs began the first of five trips to Vietnam that he would undertake in the next two years. It was his first return visit since he had arrived there in 1967 as a 23-year-old infantry lieutenant. The author was disabled in Vietnam, and headed Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service for the Veterans Administration.
