About This Item

New York, New York: Grove Press, January 1971. First Edition. Cloth . Very Good/Very Good. Duodecimo (12mo.) in very good dustjacket. NOT price clipped. Original price of $5 on jacket flap. Red cloth with black lettering on spine. Clean, sound, bright review copy. Review slip laid in indicates this First Edition was published on January 29, 1971, although the copyright page says 'First Evergreen Black Cat Edition, 1970' and 'First Printing' on next line. This is clearly a First Edition. And it is clear why most dealers have this listed as a 1970 release. If not for the piece of photo-copied paper from publisher, I would not know differently. If that is not confusing enough, let us address the Kay Boyle's inscription. It says 'April 1982. Dear Robert Smith -- I am searching for a copy of this book, and reluctantly sending it to you!' Kay Boyle'. A nice inscription indeed, but I wish it was clear which Robert Smith that Ms. Boyle is addressing. There seem to have been at least two in her life. Robert Charles Smith was/is a Poltical Science Professor at San Francisco State. Boyle also knew a Robert W. Smith. There is a large collection of correspondence between Boyle and this 2nd Smith accesible on the internet. One of the Robert Smiths wrote about Boyle in The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Or perhaps this was yet another one. No middle initial is given. Obviously it would be nice to know more about this association, but it remains a mystery.
