About This Item
New York: Ballantyne Books, 2020 First International Edition, third printing. Hard cover, 8vo., (measuring 6 ½ x 9 ½ inches) in mint colored paper covered boards, a light blue spine, titles in gilt. In a similar colored, art deco-influenced dust jacket, now protected in mylar. Condition: Near Fine, with one small scuff to front board; d/j/ is Fine. Allende's best selling novel is based on some true events of the Spanish Civil War. Her characters, an unlikely couple, undertake a dangerous mountain journey to France, and thence sail aboard the cargo ship "Winnepeg" to exile in Chile, an escape organized by the Chilean poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda in the late 1930's. From a review by Paula McLain in the Telegraph (2020): "In "A Long Petal of the Sea," as in much of Allende's fiction, there is the sense that every human life is an odyssey, and that how and where we connect creates the fabric of our existence: the source of our humanity." . International Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Fine.
