About This Item
New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1940. hardcover. Good/good. Paul Laune. Dust jacket has closed tears, some chipping at spine; now in new removable protective cover. Tan cloth covered boards with red print and illustration on the front and spine. Illustrated end papers, frontispiece. Brief Christmas gift inscription, dated 1943. Pages are clean and unmarked. Grosset and Dunlap hard cover with dust jacket, copyright 1940, #5 in series, 214 pages, illustrated by Paul Laune. 12mo (5"" x 7.5"") Although the printing is not stated, certain factors indicate a pre-World War II printing: the presence of blank pages (which were eliminated as part of the war conservation efforts); and good quality paper stock used (during the war Grosset & Dunlap changed to high acid content paper stock, which became very tan and brittle over time). Also, the frontispiece illustration is on glossy paper; beginning in 1941 Grosset & Dunlap changed to printing frontispieces on plain paper stock; and also changed bindings from cloth covered boards to paper covered boards. Lone Ranger titles on the dust jacket rear go through the present title; G-Men titles go through #3: The G-Men Trap the Spy Ring; Jimmie Drury titles go through #3: Caught by the Camera. The rear flap advertises Don Winslow of the Navy.
