About This Item
New Haven, CT: Yale University Press / Museum of London, 1992. First edition. Quarto. 624 pp; profuse color & b/w illustrations. Cloth with dustjacket. VG/VG, clean, tight copy; "John Russell, 1992" inked on half title page, else unmarked; jacket has one closed tear at top edge, corners & top of spine lightly rubbed. Georgian London has been the subject of numerous books, but none like this. Prepared for an exhibition mounted in Essen, Germany, this book is an exhaustive overview of the material culture of London at that point in time. The book begins with 14 essays by major British scholars on aspects of urban life, from the Coronation of George IV to the rise of popular radicalism in political and economic thought. London nourished a wide variety of aspirations; its art, theater, and economic achievements in this 40-year span were notable. The remainder of this large work is devoted to the actual exhibition catalog.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.
