Description:
She writes that she is "greatly honoured that the Circle would care to hear me, and will do my best to give some idea as to how I evolved 'Adam's Breed'. I could speak on Monday October 18th at 6.45, if that will do, but I should like you to let me know for how long you would like me to speak.....". 37 Holland Street, Kensington, W.8. 28th June 1926. 1 1/4 sides 8vo on 2 conjoined leaves, on cream paper; remains of an album leaf on the blank reverse of the second side. Very good. It was not until the following January that she addressed the Writer's Circle of the Institute of Journalists, the meeting chaired by Wilhelmina Stitch who afterwards hosted a dinner at Gatti's in her honour at which the menu consisted of dishes described in "Adam's Breed".

London: Chatto & Windus, 1892. With TYPED LETTER SIGNED tipped in at title page, dated Mar. 15th, 1898 on The Survey of London letterhead to Frank Chapman, Esq. -" Dear Sir, I be(sic) to acknowledge your letter of March 10th. I think that the phrase is awkward, but it is not necessary that the verb should be in the singular. If the sentence had run 'a part of the punishments' , it should have been 'was', but it is, 'part of the punishments'; were parts here is a noun of number which may take either singular or plural. I remain, dear Sir, Very faithfully yours, Walter Besant". A photograph of Besant clipped from another publication pasted to opposing page, and also tipped in a handwritten note referring to the phrase at issue in the letter. 1642 Erasmus of Rotterdam Autobiography & Letters Dutch Renaissance Humanism "When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes."
― Erasmus
While mostly known for involvement in the Northern Renaissance, Erasmus of Rotterdam published several works on humanism and Protestant theology. Beginning in 1642, publisher Joannis Maire sought to publish an entire series of the works of Erasmus. This work, 'Vita', was the first of this series. This work and the letters therein is a reissue of the 1615 edition that was edited by the famous Dutch scholar Pieter Schrijver. 'Vita' itself is a collection of smaller works including:
·
Erasmus's 'Autobiography'
·
Beatus Rhenanus 'Biography' of Erasmus
·
Erasmus's last will and testament
·
A plethora of letters written by Erasmus to Lambertus Grunnius, Hector Deidonanus, Christophorus Messia Hispanus, Conradus Goclenius, Mutianus Rufus, Joannes de Hondt, Oecolampadius, Petrus Vulcanius, and Helius… Read More

Thomas Tryon (1634-1703) , who had at various times in his life worked as a shepherd and a hatter, was greatly influenced by the writings of Behmen. It was a result of his familiarity with Behmen's work that Tryon adopted a lifestyle of self-denial. In his words, "My drink was only water, and food only bread and some fruit. But afterwards I had more liberty given me by my guide, Wisdom, viz. to eat butter and cheese. My clothing was mean and thin, for in all things self-denial was now become my real business.
