London: The London Gazette, 1687.. 1687.. Very good. - Tall octavo [approximately 11-1/4 inches high by 6-1/2 inches wide], broadsheet newspaper printed in double columns. The newspaper has been folded once and is darkened around the edges & lightly soiled. Very good. <p>The newspaper was printed by "Tho. Newcomb in the Savoy". Of particular interest in this issue is the earliest record of horse-racing on Kersal Moor in the Manchester area of England. The following notice appears in the Advertisements column: "On Carsall Moore near Manchester in Lancashire on the 18th instant, a 20 [pound] plate will be run for to carry ten stone, and ride three heats, four miles each heat. And the next day another plate of 40 [pounds] will be run for at the same Moore, riding the same heats and carrying the same weight. The horses marks are to be given in four days before to Mr. William Swarbrick at the Kings Arms in Manchester."<p>Other notices in this column announce a new, illustrated translation of Aesop's Fables by Francis Barlow, and the London auction of "A Large and choice Collection of English Books", including books of the Common and Statute Law and related manuscripts.<p>The main feature of the issue consists of news of the Russo-Turkish war.
